I don’t have time to write much today. So here is just a short note about the Triumphal Entry of Jesus to Jerusalem as covered by David Seccombe in this The King of God’s Kingdom.
A donkey was the most common mode of transportation for those who didn’t just walk. So why was Jesus riding into Jerusalem in the equivalent of a Chevy seen as a sign?
Mark and Luke just report the fact that Jesus rode a donkey in the Triumphal Entry. But Matthew and John refer to the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9-10:
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; The battle bow shall be cut off. He shall speak peace to the nations; His dominion shall be ‘from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.
The meaning of this may not have been apparent at the time, but the idea that Jesus was a different kind of king, bringing peace and not war, became apparent over time. Both Matthew and John definitely wrote after the Jewish War and the destruction of Jerusalem.
Other suggestive Hebrew Bible links with the Triumphal Entry pointed out by Seccombe are first that the ark of the covenant had entered Jerusalem with a similar celebration (2 Samuel 6:5), and second that Jehu– who overthrew Ahab and Jezebel–was greeted as king in a similar way (2 Kings 9:13).
